ChatGPT - Explored through the eyes of a future Educator

ChatGPT is an emerging technology taking the world by storm, and is continuing to raising new questions and spark debates about the role of artificial intelligence within education. ChatGPT is an AI large language model developed by OpenAI that can be used to enhance learning in a primary school setting and cultivate creativity with students (Gordijin et .al, 2023). It has a wide range of capabilities in understanding natural language and generating coherent responses making it an ideal tool for providing students with a personalised learning experience, additional support and guidance, and knowledge to assist with learning and academic development.

As a technology which enhances learning within an Educational setting, ChatGPT has many benefits. For example, ChatGPT, much like any chat bot AI, can improve student language development, grammar, sentence structures as well as expand their vocabulary (Huang et a.l, 2020). Although ChatGPT assists personalised learning, language development, learning support and critical thinking, it can also have many pedagogical challenges and social implications. With a personalised natural conversation, ChatGPT can provide targeted feedback and suggestions based on individual student needs, as well as support and assistance in learning much like a teacher or parent (Salem et a.l, 2021) ChatGPT is intelligent, however needs human input to be explicit in instructions, developing students abilities to breakdown questions into smaller more detailed sections. Creativity can be fostered through the use of ChatGPT as students are given freedom to explore and develop ideas. An example of ChatGPT supporting student creativity is seen in the attached screen-recording . Through the platform students and/or teachers can create a narrative prompt, where learners will then have to add on and develop a creative narrative.

As a future educator, shifting teaching practices from neglect of AI help to effectively integrating ChatGPT into the classroom is almost imperative, however it can cause for distraction in the classroom, students disengaging from classroom interactions and peers resulting in less communication and reliance on other resources rather than technology (Hoofnagle, 2012). This large language model known as ChatGPT, fosters a space where students in primary school can breakdown questions themselves, making the growth of metacognition possible (Luckin, 2020). They are asked to be explicit to tear apart questions which is a skill often developed later in schooling years. Students could become dependent on this emerging technology, reducing their capacity to think independently, causing more cases of plagiarism, copyright and potentially incorrect or not age appropriate materials and information (van Dis et al., 2023).

Dear Olivia,

I loved reading your article post. Due to its reputation as a tool for cheating, ChatGPT has the air of the dreaded A.I. monster in an educational setting. However, you did a great job of coherently and clearly outlining the potential applications of the A.I. programme as a teaching aid and in the classroom. While we want to encourage innovation, I implore you to consider the academic integrity of the source; CHATGPT is more of a way for them to avoid doing work, which could be better. If you can ensure this will not happen, I then believe we can use this with positive outcomes.

Qiqi Chai (24/03/2023) Hi Olivia, Your blog post is an enriching read as you have provided both aspects of ChatGPT as to how it can be a bane and boon in education. You have rightly pointed out that it can change the future of education if rightly integrated and implemented in the teaching learning process. The video has helped in understanding the application of ChatGPT better with detailed insights. However, I feel that including more visuals and animations would have made the blog more appealing and engaging. Overall, it was a well ideated and written to provide an insight about the implication of ChatGPT on the education system.

Hi Olivia!

I thoroughly enjoyed your blog post. ChatGPT feels like this boogeyman of A.I. in education, particularly in its perception as a cheating tool. However, you've done a really good job of coherently and effectively explaining the potential uses for the A.I. program in the classroom and as a tool for teachers. Especially for things related to language development and critical thinking. It also seems very effective in acting as a form of scaffolding too.

With the word count considered, It does feel like the page is a bit wordy and needs to be divided up to allow room for supplamentary images and page breaks. This would just free up the page a bit and for more effective visual…

Hi Olivia,

What an interesting and thought provoking blog. It is very insightful into the possible uses of Chatgpt within the classroom. I particularly really like the interesting example of using Chatgpt to make creative writing prompts for students (great use of original material by providing a video). I also really like the use of Chatgpt as a place to get targeted feedback on student's work as it gives concrete examples of how they could improve in future work. In the future, it would be good to add more links to how pedagogies relate to Chatgpt, as this indicates to teachers why Chatgpt will be a great resource for them to use. Overall, It was a very well thought out…
